Things to Know
During spring, summer, and fall, there is a shuttle bus (the red route) that will take visitors to each of the viewpoints located along Hermit Road. During the winter, the road is open to private vehicles.
The bus route takes 80 minutes from beginning to end, not including the time you spend at each of the stops. If you plan on getting off at each of the stops and walking around a bit before heading to the next viewpoint, I’d allot closer to 4 hours to complete the route.
Depending on what time of the year you visit, I’d recommend waiting until at least 10:00AM or so before heading out. If you head out earlier than this, you may find that the sun isn’t quite high enough in the sky, so the bottom of the canyon made still be in the shade.
If you want to stop at all the view points, make sure you do it on the way to Hermit’s Rest. The bus route that heads back to the Village form Hermit’s Rest only stops at a handful of the viewpoints instead of stopping at all of them. Honestly, there isn’t much to do at Hermit’s Rest. Thanks to the small trees and shrubbery, you can’t get the best view of the canyon, but they have restrooms, snacks for sale, and a gift shop, making it worth the extra stop at the end.
